this is fascinating! thanks for sharing :) Radish sounds like the neighbourhood I've been looking for - I love the point on the minor inconveniences being worth it compared to the sanitized comfort. I have a few questions:
1. what seems like the ideal size for a commune?
2. do most people living in radish work remotely?
3. what are your thoughts on mixing extended family and friends within a commune? can that work well?
Great questions! I don't think that there are universal answers, but I'll share what's true over here:
1. We've talked about 12-20 adults being a size sweet spot. There's almost always a critical mass in town, people still feel close, but there's always some form of serendipity bc the group is large. But it's close to impossible to kickstart a 12 person block unless you're taking over a new build apartment building, so growing incrementally is usually the ticket
2. No, I'd guess that 50%-75% of folks work at an office on any given day
3. There are lots of grandparents around as visitors, sometimes for a week or two at a time, and the group welcomes it! But I can imagine that multigenerational families living here would create a pretty different dynamic. I certainly think it's possible, but probably personality dependent!
